We’ve all experienced it: a friend, former classmate, or an acquaintance over social media sends you a message: “Do you have life insurance already?” For those with their own policies or plans already, these questions are easy to answer. But for those who are not familiar with insurances, they get curious, which begs the question: what is a Financial Advisor, and what exactly do they do?
As suggested by the job title, a financial advisor is someone who is responsible for giving advice to clients about the state of their finances and how to handle it. But being a real financial advisor requires more than that. It requires the passion to change lives with responsible spending and proper planning for the future, both for himself/herself and their families.
As defined by Investopedia, a financial advisor “uses their knowledge and expertise to construct personalized financial plans that aim to achieve the financial goals of clients. These plans include not only investments but also savings, budget, insurance, and tax strategies.” Advisors help clients create and execute financial plans that will benefit them the most, through strategies and policies that will work best for them. They are not the “police” for your money, they are simply here to guide and give perspective into the future. After all, how one spends their money today will affect how much they will have in the future.

Being a financial advisor is no easy task. But given the amount of “advisors” sending us messages and stopping us at the mall, why does it seem that everyone can be one? The answer is in dedication. Yes, anyone can start selling you policies, but not everyone can properly prepare you for a secured financial future. Being the perfect financial advisor is a whole other level.
The right advisor must care. A good financial advisor isn’t concerned with their own deadlines, but their clients’: Is it too late for them to file a policy? How much would they need to save up to be able to retire comfortably by 60 and send their children to school with no worries? Financial advisors are thoroughly involved in their clients’ lives because they care for their futures, and they want to change their lives.
Beyond flexible work schedules and other monetary perks, a career as a financial advisor is rewarding on its own. Being able to go beyond policies and help individuals and families secure their futures and create safety nets in case of untoward incidents is something that not all jobs can offer.
